Taiwan may relax mask rules when 70% fully vaccinated





There are reports today in Taiwanese media that mask wearing may be “phased out” once 70% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

According to the Taiwan News website, one mayor on the island has said they will ask Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Centre to relax existing restrictions once more than 70% of Taiwan’s population have received one vaccine dose.

Currently, Taiwan is following Level 2 restrictions in a four-tier system, where Level 1 is the least severe. Mask-wearing is largely enforced, but there are exceptions, such as in restaurants. Even in Level 1 restrictions, masks must still be worn at all times on public transport and in crowded public venues, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

This has led to some discussion recently about when people in Taiwan might be able to stop wearing masks altogether. The broadcaster SETN has quoted one toxicologist, Chao Ming-wei, as saying this will potentially by the spring.

By this time, Taiwan will have hoped to fully vaccinate 70% of its 23.5m population. However, at present, only around 30% of the population have received two vaccine doses.
