Restriction lifting 'is another milestone'



The chief executive of SLOTXO an organisation set up to lobby for businesses in Newcastle says he thinks most will stick to restrictions of mask-wearing, table service and social distancing.

Despite Covid restrictions lifting nationally today, Stephen Patterson, who heads NE1, said he was not expecting things to radically change.

"It's one of many milestones and around 85% of the businesses I've been talking to are going to keep some restrictions," he said.

NE1 has arranged a number of events in the city across the summer - including outdoor cinema and a park on the Quayside - to encourage people to return to Newcastle.

The palm-tree filled park boasts interactive 3D artwork (above) on the pavement and there's also a Light park with giant see-saws (below) that light up and make sounds.

Mr Patterson said: "What Covid has done is shine a spotlight on the value of our public space and super-charged our efforts to make the best of such areas."
